Translator’s Workbench – Getting Started

Target group
This one-day course is suitable for users who are new to SDL Trados 2007 and as preparation for the Level 1 Certification exam.

Content
This course teaches the basics of working with translation memories and termbases (dictionaries). The course explains how to apply the three main components used when translating with SDL Trados 2007:

• Translator’s Workbench (translation memory application)
• TagEditor (translation editor)
• MultiTerm (terminology software)

After an introduction to using the tools, standard (integrated) workflows – for Microsoft Office documents (Word, PowerPoint and Excel), etc. – are presented and tried out with practical examples. The course also teaches how to prepare a translation and perform the necessary post-translation services (quantity analyses, making documents ready for delivery). Activation of the online certification exam is also included in the course package.

Recommendation
Choose this course if you have no previous experience of SDL Trados or if you feel that you are only using a fraction of the tools available in Trados. This course is also suitable as preparation for the SDL Level 1 Certification exam.

Translator’s Workbench – Intermediate  

Target group
This one-day course is designed for users who have basic experience of SDL Trados 2007 and are fairly confident using the Translator’s Workbench, TagEditor and MultiTerm applications. It teaches the subjects covered in the SDL Level 2 Certification exam.

Content
The functions of the Translator’s Workbench, TagEditor and MultiTerm programs are taught in greater depth with practical exercises given. The course also includes how to assign attributes to translation units (so-called “project settings”), translation workflows for special document formats (Adobe FrameMaker, InterLeaf, Adobe InDesign, QuarkXpress and Adobe PageMaker) and creating translation memories from existing translations (WinAlign). Activation of the online certification exam is also included in the course package.

Recommendation
We suggest that new users of SDL Trados 2007 leave a gap of a few weeks after completing the Getting Started course, in order to gather practical experience of what they have learnt. This will allow the user to gain a better understanding of the capabilities and advantages of the functions taught in the course. These functions can then be put to effective day-to-day use.

Translator’s Workbench – Advanced

Target group
This one-day course is designed for users with basic knowledge of SDL Trados 2007 and experience of translating with translation memory systems. This also includes project managers who wish to work in a more effective and targeted way. The course prepares for the SDL Level 3 Certification exam.

Content
This course shows how to create project-specific translation memories as well as the numerous options available for managing a TM. This includes filtered imports and exports (e.g. to translation memory fields, users or times) and performing TM-wide maintenance. Furthermore, translating documents with markup language file formats (e.g. HTML as a web page format or XML as a data exchange format) using tag setting files is covered. Additional options available in MultiTerm for working more effectively with terminologies are also presented and tried out in practice. These include conversion, import and export for different file formats (e.g. Excel), termbase definitions, formats for entering terminology or a company’s own layout models. Activation of the online certification exam is also included in the course package.

Recommendation
This course provides more detailed knowledge of the organisational aspects of working with translation memories and terminology databases. It also serves as preparation for the Level 3 exam, the highest SDL Certification level.
